Thinking about becoming an occupational therapist?

Occupational Therapy ranks among 20 best healthcare jobs according to the US World and News Report.  It is expected to grow by 27% by 2024.

What does this mean for you as a potential OT?  It means you'll love your job and there will be opportunities for you to be employed upon graduation more than most professions!

Things happening around Iowa in our OT Programs:

Allen College

Allen College is proud to announce that the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Program is now fully accredited! Students in the first cohort (the Class of 2017) are in the process of finishing their last semester on campus, and preparing to begin the first of their two 12-week Level II fieldwork experiences in May. The program’s second cohort (the Class of 2018), is currently embarking on the journey of the terminal project, and we are all excited to see what directions those take. In addition, all of the OT students have constantly been keeping busy outside the classroom, participating in Allen College’s annual service days, participating in IOTA’s Capitol Hill Day, providing support to UNI’s Spectrum Project, and volunteering with other local non-profit agencies.

This year, the Allen College SOTA group also hosted their second annual youth Halloween party for a local Head Start facility and held a successful fundraiser to support a variety of local non-profit agencies, including Retrieving Freedom and North Star Community Services. In September, the students visited St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Waverly, to provide education on backpack safety. While there, it became evident that the school needed to start preparing for unexpected flooding from recent torrential rains. The Allen College OT students responded immediately and volunteered to help remove everything from the schools basement storage to keep it safe from damage. The college’s chancellor received a wonderful letter of gratitude from the school’s principle and instructors following the event.

Indian Hills

Indian Hill's students have been very busy.  Club functions have included participating in the STEM festival at the Fairfield IA school, Career Day for 10th graders from the surrounding area and volunteering at "Empowered Sports League" at the YMCA in Ottumwa.

The class of 2017 has left for their last fieldwork before graduation, but completed Ergonomic evaluations for various departments at IHCC. The class of 2018 is ready for Pediatrics and Functional Kinesiology classes. Our faculty is preparing for re-accreditation visit in May.
